  •  Two regulations I'd like to see for sure (5+ / 0-)

    although they are probably unenforceable.

    (1) Mentally ill or psychotic or incompetent should not have guns.  Note that this requires the intervention of a medical opinion - not the government.

    (2) Minors should only have access to firearms after a training course where they learn basic safety.

    •  I'm with you, (8+ / 0-)

as long as the training is required and part of our educational system.

    •  actually both of those are parts of current law (11+ / 0-)

being "adjudicated mentally defective" or being involuntarily committed both make you a prohibited possessor....the problem here is medical privacy laws tend to keep the information needed to make a determination out of the public record.....Overall, I think laws like HIPPA do more good than harm though it does make it more difficult to determine status for gun rights......

In almost all instances, children, (under 18) are not allowed possession of a firearm unless in the presence of their parent or guardian and most states require a hunter safety course before issuing a hunting license to anyone under 18....My buddy right now is looking for a good course for his 13yo so they can go hunting together......

    •  So you don't support any regulation (0+ / 0-)

on the types of guns that can be sold/bought, on felons buying weapons, or on the safety mechanisms installed on guns?  That doesn't seem like much a of a dialogue.

Given that you do support (extremely minimal) regulation, you'd at least agree with the (virtually unanimously held) idea that constitutional rights and principles must sometimes be balanced against competing rights and principles.  Once you make this concession, we enter the realm of public policy rather than clinging strictly to a single interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.  And if we're going to discuss public policy, you cannot simply cut off debate over the effectiveness of gun regulation.

      •  i think he said that these would be two (8+ / 0-)

regs he's like to see "for sure"

I didnt assume it to be an exhaustive list.

      •  A disingenuous response (5+ / 0-)

It's reasonable to suspect that a response to such questions would choose to take regulations the responder knows as being already on the books as a given.

It's also disingenuous to discuss regulation with the pretense that firearms aren't already highly regulated, and that most of us support the existing regulations.

on the types of guns that can be sold/bought

What do you hope to accomplish with such regulations?

        on felons buying weapons

A lot of people DON'T support that restriction.  Many people feel that once you have "paid your debt" to society you should recover all of your rights.  I'm not sure how I feel about the issue but you should know that many people of good faith can disagree with the felon gun ban.

or on the safety mechanisms installed on guns

When those mechanisms are imposed by lawyers and politicians whom don't know anything about firearms all they do is drive up the cost of ownership.

California mandates magazine disconnects.  All that accomplishes is to raise the cost of firearms ownership, install more parts that can break and take away the ability to do a tactical reload.  They conveniently exempted their own law enforcement agencies based on the last complaint but still choose to impose the requirement on everyone else.

you'd at least agree with the (virtually unanimously held) idea that constitutional rights and principles must sometimes be balanced against competing rights and principles

How do my firearms endanger your rights?

    •  I believe the 1st regulation is already in place (7+ / 0-)

      in most jurisdictions.

      It's not strongly enforced.

      Thanks, but no thanks.

      (1) Mentally ill or psychotic or incompetent should not have guns.  Note that this requires the intervention of a medical opinion - not the government.

The better way to handle this is to require due process.  Involuntary hospitalization requires Judaical involvement in all 50 states AFAIK.  If you get committed against your will you can lose your RKBA rights.  But just for being sick on the word of a Doctor and not a Judge?  No thanks.
