  •  Back in the early 70s, after Roe, my favorite (6+ / 0-)

cousin was pregnant with her third child. My cousin was large plus-size woman, and she smoked. She had had problems with toxemia in her first two pregnancies.  Int he 5th month they learned the fetus was anencepahlic--for those of you who don't know what that means, it's where the skull doesn't close and there's merely a flap of skin covering the brain; it's often accompanied by hydrocephalus) and hydrocephalic. There was no brain, just a brain stem. They also beleived there was a real likelihood the fetus would die in utero or never be born, therefore they rec'd an abortion.

My cousin was still a Catholci then (this incident is what finally made her leave) and consulted three priests. Two told her she must carry tot he 7th month so the "baby: could be born and baptized; one had compassion and told her to go ahead ASAP.  She waited until the 7th month, by which time the fetus was too large to be delivered vaginally safely--they did a C section.

ANd my cousin left the church and never had her third healthy child bpatized.

The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.
