  •  For Our Occupations (8+ / 0-)

They hate us for occupying their countries. Robert Pape of U of Chicago analyzed Defense Department data to determine that suicide bombing is the result of military occupations.

Of course, we could have just realized that since Bush/Cheney rationalized occupying Iraq on the grounds that they hate us, the truth must be the opposite: they hate us because we're occupying them.

I don't excuse suicide bombers from killing bystanders and terrorizing millions around the world, including Muslims. But I know that ending our occupations would end most of the rate of suicide bombings. Especially of our Americans in the line of fire - their deaths and maimings would go way down.

We have many better ways of dealing with America's problems in their countries than by occupying them. And those other ways create much less asymmetric threats from suicide bombers and other terrorism. They even limit the amount of "collateral damage" (murder) to nonmilitary as military occupation decreases.

Western interference in Middle Eastern affairs goes back to Alexander the Great and his bloated dreams of conquest, followed by Persian, Roman, Turkish, Western European, American, Soviet, Russian, Central Asian and Eastern Asian meddling, intrigue and outright thievery.  Even today, the U.S., the Western European powers, Russia and China are hard at the old Great Game, batting Israel, Iran, Afghanistan and the Arab countries around like kittens toying with balls of yarn, and all the while keeping the masses of the populations in check with poverty, oppression, ignorance and lack of opportunity.  It's no surprise they've resorted to desperate measures like suicide bombings:  We've left them no other viable alternative.

Sure, there's plenty more wrong with US policies in other countries. Of couse, "X" intereference in "Y" affairs is universal to all countries. Every "Muslim" country was conquered by an invading horde, typically killing all who didn't convert until the territory was completely conquered. But that history hasn't created suicide bombers as insurgent against the Muslim state created there.

The study pointed at a very specific correlation that has obvious mechanisms of cause and effect: military occupation provokes suicide bombing.

Which is good news. Because the US is not going to stop interfering with the affairs of any foreign state. No state with any power or any interests abroad (ie. no state) has ever refrained from interfering where it can. But the US can stop military occupation, and stop suicide bombing, which is ensures bystanders and entire countries stay caught in violent conflict. Merely messing with each other on political and economic terms is another level of conflict that we must outgrow, but it's preferable to the kind of counter/terror war that features suicide bombing and military occupation.
