When I was about 20, Richard took me on a "nice day hike" up Long's Peak in CO. The nice day hike turned out to be a two day trek up a steep peak just short of a technical climb. I am afraid of heights so I was terrified toting a pack along a small ledge at the edge of a cliff that dropped off thousands of feet. I was literally frozen with fear trying to climb up the face of the peak. I don't know how I made it up!

When we finally got there, I sat and watched some burly men who arrived at the summit with sheet white faces saying they've never been so scared.  I would have refused to move except you HAVE to get off the face of the mountain before noon when the thunderstorms roll in.

I have no idea how I got down.

I also did not appreciate being stuck in a tent on a plateau halfway up the mountain the night before our final ascent. We had to sit up and hold up the tent because the wind was so strong, it would have destroyed.

The problem is that my husband is so extreme in all recreational activities that I really can't keep up. He runs hundred mile ultra-marathons, enjoys lite wintercamping expeditions where he sleeps under tarps in the snow, and is an amazing skier. I go to Curves.

I blog on healthcare issues for Tikkun Daily as Lauren Reichelt.
