OK...I DID ignore these recent historical cases.

I guess that I didn't consider them relevant comparisons because, while in name at least, they were democracies, none of them had a long term track record of surviving political, economic and social cycles.  Ours has.

BTW, I am not saying political violence isn't dangerous, I am just saying that there isn't much of a historical case to be made for it being a serious factor in killing established (220+ years) democracies.

Democracy that hasn't had at least a few military coups and such......

They WERE a democracy - no kings, no hereditary titles, popular discussion and vote on popular issues - for about their first 200 years or so (c 900-c. 1100 AD). After that the factional feuds - a problem from the get-go - escalated out of hand, and the Crown they owed lip-service to stepped in and slapped them all down. No more democracy.

The author of Njal's Saga saw the beginnings, and warned of the end. "This land was built up by law, but by lawlessness will it be destroyed."

      If it's
      Not your body
      Then it's
      Not your choice
      AND it's
      None of your damn business!

A high impact low frequency event, like the depression we so narrowly avoided, like a widespread natural disaster or widespread terrorist attact.

We, as Americans are not immune from the dark urges of the human soul.

Our history, our Constitutional foundations, our cultural individualism, all makes us resistant to the diseases of tryanny or dictatorship, but the powers and individuals that would rather rule than be governed have been with us since our birth as a nation and will never, ever go away.

That is why the slightest erosion of those protections must be addressed.

We have become both lazy and neglectful, taking for granted that democracy is our right and does not need our individual assistance to survive.

It is our right, as it is of all peoples on this earth, but like them it will exist only if we fight to keep it.

You may not feel warm enough. That does not entitle you to burn our house down. Instead, go out and get some wood for the stove.
