Was in Russia on business in August 2001.  Here is a post I made to a GPS-related usenet group on September 2nd, 2001.

I'm just back from Russia, and did bring the GPS with no
problems.  Security checks of carryon luggage
for internal flights was no problem, though they did give my bag more
thought than most (between GPS, cell phone and SLR camera w/lenses,
I can imagine that).  On a side note, it was nice to see
that the Russian X-ray techs were really looking at
the images and often stopping the conveyor and discussing
what they saw, vs the zombie-like techs you see at US airports.

The "zombies" I refer to was security at Boston's Logan airport, from where I had departed.

At the time, it seemed a pithy remark about how security at Logan airport hadn't even blinked when I carried a bag full of hard to identify electronics and optics onto a fully loaded 747.

10 days later, it seemed a horribly tragic remark.

    Today, it seems fucking criminal.
