  •  Oh, and wow for your numbers. Point is, (0+ / 0-)

Obama isn't winning the PR battle by any means.  I tried to keep my point non specific - he has done some stuff (wouldn't you know someone would come along and deny even that milquetoast comment) but he can't sell it without a formally prepared speech.

It's like I told my new graduate student before her first oral presentation to the other graduate students.  Be confident and hide the things that didn't work because they don't know our system anyway.  If you are uncertain of an answer to their questions, fake it with certainty and confidence.

he had his window to act.  So many structural changes he could have moved on to help the country- energy, jobs, go after Medicare fraud, adjust and extend social security's life, even a line item veto to fight earmarking...

Instead he wasted his time on the HCRA that people still don't understand, and that people still don't want large parts of, appointed more czars than Peter the Great, took GM from the bond holders and gave it to the unions, coddled Wall Street as he told us all he was not going to do...

No wonder his base isn't responding.

      •  He never had a bullet proof majority. He had 60 (0+ / 0-)

Senators who caucused with the democrats for a few months but even among those 60 senators there was never 60 senators for more progressive policies.

He got a version of healthcare reform passed anyway.  If he hadn't pushed it in his first two years it was never going to get done.  Would you prefer that healthcare get kicked down the road again?  If so then you actually agree with someone who is derided as the devil on here, Rahm Emmanuel.

      •  I think the logic was that that was the best thin (0+ / 0-)

to attack first.  I wonder if they didn't expect the Baucus, Lincoln, Lieberman, etc fights.

It's so sad for me because the environment is my issue and I can't see it going anywhere at this point.  No matter what happens Tuesday, even if we retain majorities, there is going to be gridlock worse than before.

If Grayson loses his election they should pick him for Press Secretary!  Well, that is about like dreaming that we are going to win anything.

    •  I have seen and heard him sell it plenty (0+ / 0-)
With formally prepared speeches and without.  During the backyard events he handled most of the questions masterfully.  During the event with the Republican house members.  At rallies (formally prepared speeches), town halls (not formally prepared).  He hasn't been perfect and has made some mistakes but I have seen him sell the Democrats' accomplishments over and over and over.

I think the bigger problem is that the bench to sell these accomplishments on the Democratic side is sorely lacking.  Obama can only do so much, even as President.  Others need to get out there and sell the accomplishment.  Pelosi has been a terrific speaker but she is a terrible spokesperson.  I wish they would all watch Debbie Wasserman Schultz when she is on the pundit shows.  To the point and great at conveying the message simply.

    •  I'm not sure (0+ / 0-)

I'm not sure that this is good advice to grad students.

Academia is the place for honesty. Or am I just projecting physical-science standards on the whole University?
