gives you the GOP.  While I sometimes grind my teeth over the 'moderates,' there is a necessity for balance, which those folks provide.  Too much purity is like inbreeding:  it feeds on and destroys itself.

of) of people who consider themselves liberal/progressive vs. those who consider themselves conservative and independents.

They far out number the liberals.

What you're saying will mean Republicans forever.

I can't (and won't) get into a semantic discussion of the difference or lack thereof.  I do know that extremes of any stripe make actual governing impossible.  Yes, the GOP can manage to push things through when they have power, but they don't govern, they bully.  As much as I want liberal/progressive policies addressed and enacted, I don't think that bullying is the best way to do it.  That doesn't convince people, especially those who are on the other end of the spectrum.  The ones who can be convinced of anything are in the middle.  Nothing is served if they are turned off of the process by screeching or bullying on both/either side.

I'm not smart enough about either politics or psychology to know how to make anything work or convince anyone of anything, but two extreme ends of the political line just plain don't work to really get stuff done.

Agreed, luckylizard. If you trend towards the extremes on both sides of the spectrum, then all you get is a massive noise tunnel. Well, one that's bigger than the current one, anyway.

It is our variations that make the Democratic Party a force to still be reckoned with. And we abandon that at our own peril.

...I'm a little bit of a Pollyanna when it comes to politics, I suppose.

"Liberal" has been made into a bad word.
While it is true that more people may self-identify as "conservative" (or moderate) when you probe their positions on actual issues, you'll find that most of the people actually prefer surprisingly progressive policies.
