        retire in Arizona these days. As jbeach said, Florida retirees include a disproportionate number of New York Jews (along with other New Englanders). Of course the retirees do still trend more conservative than young voters, as they do everywhere, but they're not among the main sources of Republicanism in the state.

        Along with the Southerners in the panhandle, Florida's Cuban population - especially the older generations - trends conservative, for the same reason that Russian immigrants of a certain age tend to be conservative, because of bad experiences with socialism.

        However, the fact that a fairly large number of Republican votes come from Hispanic voters and New England retirees keeps Florida's Republicans more socially moderate and less blatantly racist than in most of the South. (There are exceptions in parts of northern Florida and the panhandle, where most Republican votes are coming from white natives and military servicemembers)

      others have noted that we have a lot of retirees from NY and NE...but keep in mind, many people from those areas are "snowbirds" whose main residence is up north. The ones who move their legal residence to Florida are often there as much for the tax benefits as for the warm weather...
