  •  A number of GOPers will try to do it (0+ / 0-)

but I think Boehner will probably stop it. He was around for the last government shutdown and knows that it propelled Clinton to re-election, and Clinton was worse off then than Obama is today.  Rather, I think that what McConnell is saying is closer to what the GOP leadership really thinks:  they simply want to use these 2 years to frame issues to get Obama out of the White House.

In the GOP's view, they think Obama won because a lot of black people and brown people voted for him and not real Americans (i.e., white americans).  Therefore, they don't think he's legitimate.  They don't realize that outside the South, Obama won the majority of the white vote in the states that he won (and he won most of the states outside of the south).

That is Obama's hidden strength. He has already received broad acceptance by the American people.  All he really needs to do is find some way to alleviate the debt burden felt by individuals and businesses and unleash job growth.  Easier said than done, but I don't think he needs to do anything legislatively.  He only needs to run the government well, connect with his base, and find creative ways to get jobs going in the regions he will need to win.
