Repubs have been implanting rightwing conservatives (aka wedge issue warriors) in local, state, and federal positions for decades (starting with Reagan).  This was a carefully planned, long-term, grassroots effort.  They've lost a few battles, but won many more.

They've been patient and methodical, regrouping after electoral defeats, and fielding new nutjobs to replace those who were not successful. Now, they have their people ingrained and implanted in many local school boards, city councils, local and state courts, state leadership positions, appointed to SCOTUS, and even Buhsies moled into the Obama administration--who left them there to backstab and wreak havoc on his policies at every opportunity.

In many ways, I have despaired of yet admired their determination and long-term commitment to their causes.  I wish that we had maintained as active a grassroots organization and had been as politically savvy as they have been.  Unfortunately, our base seems to think only presidential elections are important.  They are...but regularly electing progressives to our local and state government is vital to our interests, also.
