    •  Going into 1992 (0+ / 0-)

we had Paul Simon and Alan Dixon.  Dixon's late, decisive (among three) vote to confirm Clarence Thomas doomed him in the 1992 primary and resulted in Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun.  Then, Simon retired in 1996 and Durbin succeeded him.  Moseley-Braun was dead meat heading into 1998 thanks to various missteps and Fitzgerald took advantage.  Fitzgerald was himself dead meat in 2004 because Illinois (statewide) has a low tolerance for Republicans at the federal level.  He spared himself the indignity of having his ass handed to him by stepping down.  The Republicans thought they had the ideal candidate in a telegenic cypher named Jack Ryan (who even shared the name of a Tom Clancy hero!), but that went up in smoke when divorce papers from his actress wife revealed that Mr. Ryan had a penchant for Paris sex clubs and pressured her into publicly performing at said clubs.  The primary runner-up was a fine, upstanding individual named Jim Oberweis, whose dairy company makes good lemonade but who otherwise was a pre-version of Sharron Angle.  The state GOP had no use for Mr. Oberweis, so they cast about for a replacement candidate, getting turned down by former Bears coach Mike Ditka before doing what any beleagured party committee faced with the prospect of Jim Oberweis as their Senate candidate would do: bus in Alan Keyes.  Meanwhile, a skinny guy with a funny name upset the Dem establishment pick (Dan Hynes) and the rest is history.

I'mma let you finish, Barack, but the teabaggers have done about the most for international peace of all time.--The collective GOP 10/9/09
