latinos... and they may well do better with Latino voters than with African-American voters.  I have a hard time imagining the GOP ever get more than 15% of the AA vote ever since Nixon's southern strategy.

For various historical reasons the GOP does well with Cubans, and let's hope that when the old generation dies out that Cuban-Americans will turn more to the left.

But there will always be other strong conservative undercurrents in the Latino electorate.  Right now the GOP is trying to kill that off through fairly overt racism, but still... look at how poor people vote in Colombia, in Guatemala, even in Mexico.  Right of center parties or even crazy right-wing parties often do very well in Latin American elections.  Uribe is a sh!t but he won his election.

So who can the GOP coopt or peel off and bring into coalition?  Protestant evangelical latinos, who are increasing in numbers, are one obvious target.  A lot of them get sucked into the church of prosperity type mindset.  Some traditional Catholic and religiously conservative Latinos will vote GOP if they don't feel like they are being assaulted - so that can be an important demographic in NM, TX, especially where there is a Latino community that goes back many generations, and/or has a high small business ownership rate and is susceptible to GOP misinformation on economy.  The Rio Grande Valley itself will probably always be D because it's so damn poor and anyone with any sense who lives down there knows s/he doesn't have much in common with Dallas debutantes and ranch-style suburbs.
