  •  There were a lot more than 20 people. (0+ / 0-)

from the reporting at the time:

The verdict against Mehserle enflamed emotions in Oakland, where 30 businesses were damaged and 78 people were arrested for violations that included failure to disperse, vandalism and assaulting a police officer.

Protesters looted an athletic footwear store and ransacked a jewelry shop. The windows of a bank were smashed, fires were set fires in several trash bins, and a small incendiary device was detonated near a police station but caused no damage.

I live here.  I saw the damage with my own eyes. I saw the pictures of the riot - taken by my friends. A couple hundred people (who I know or at least assume were not part of the protest), but nonetheless used the protest as an occasion for this bullshit.

    •  You're right. There were about 80 arrests (1+ / 0-)

But only about 20 were people from Oakland. Many trouble-makers came in from other cities, even some from out of state.

      BTW, I live here too.

      •  I agree - and I wish the out of towners (0+ / 0-)

        would stay the heck away.

And the arrests were only part of the problem - there were a lot more than 80 people involved. It sucks, because it creates a news story that is something other than "protests over killer cop." It allows the media to blame not only Oscar Grant but an entire community.
