Remember that line from the Godfather films? Organized crime used its financial power (and murder) to "legitimize" their operations. If what they did was OK under the laws, then they were model citizens.

Looking at the numbers/data in this diary (and many others on this subject) shows that the power-hungry few at the top are like those mobsters in those movies.

But, aren't thieves just thieves? If you take more than you deserve or earn, then you have stolen. If your compensation is more than is reasonable, then you burglarized the company. If you don't pay the taxes that are due, then you have cheated the society that has made your lavish life possible. Yes, judges and lawyers rubberstamp all those activities, but aren't they just thieves nonetheless?

Unhappily, judging from this last election cycle, even though many at the bottom of the income/economic ladder are ruined, they still feel the need, based upon the tainted evidence they can understand, to bend over for the 1% who seize everything. If you can't get most of the people to think, then this system of government doesn't work. Sadly, what would come in its place would be a totalitarian/authoritarian regime even more favorable to these greed-mongers from Hell.

Greenspan admits his free market faith was "a mistake" - Reliance on self interest creates a flaw "in how the world works."
