I am an attorney and I am amazed when discussing a client's criminal record with a client, why said client pleaded guilty to an earlier crime.  The usual response is "because my (court-appointed) attorney told me to plead guilty."  There is usually very little evidence to convict these clients and if their cases had gone to trial, the majority would have prevailed.  But in my experience, court appointed attorneys will not fight for indigent clients. They just have the indigent clients take plea bargains.

However, you can bet that the rich will always be able to afford the best criminal defense lawyers that money can buy, along with the local DA when possible.  I don't see that changing anytime soon.  My advice is never have a court appointed attorney represent you.

a plea that involved a deferred felony conviction in the first place so that the 2 misdemeanors look like a better deal in writing.  It makes no sense.  This was a hit and run accident and they usually throw the book at you for those, not the hitting but the running.
