  •  high speed rail may yet happen here, though (8+ / 0-)

the trog's and teapartiers will make it tough for a time.

Papa Lippy built railroad cars for a time, but in the late '50's, the plant closed as we were herded to autos and highways.

Some of this will happen relatively soon, I believe, and then states that don't have it will start to feel left out.

If residents see a few billion fly out of the state, we may get torch and pitchfork time moved up on the schedule.

    •  Some variations are already in places you don't (4+ / 0-)

      expect to find them.

My wife, La Teen Queen daughter and I rode in the Apple Cider Century (but only the 50 mile route) back in September. The ride starts and ends in Three Oaks, MI, a rural area in the southwestern corner of the state.

Not a place you'd expect to see high-speed rail (and I'm pretty sure it doesn't stop there), but, sure enough, we rode over and along a track marked "Warning:High Speed Rail".

We chuckled a bit and wondered what that might mean out in rural Michigan. Maybe Zeb tosses an extra log in the fire.

      Until...a train went by.
Zip, Zam, Zowie, and Swoosh!!!, baby. Them be fairly impressive to watch go by.

I still doubt they make much economic sense in much of the US, but lots of fun to watch.

what an odd concept.  Fight back against the consensus that, except for waging wars, the feds can do nothing positive--what an even odder concept.

To quote Carville--it ain't rocket science.
