  •  Part of what I'd like to see (7+ / 0-)

is additional tracks laid down - both on the Hudson line (because there is nothing worse than being on an Amtrak train from Albany to Penn when you're stuck behind a Metro North local!)...and in that godawful stretch between Schenectady and Albany. A 20 minute drive takes 45+ minutes!

Also, I think we would be well served to have a line from Albany to Montreal...and maybe high speed rail from Albany to Boston?

(Yes, I have a wish list. I LOVE living in the Albany area and having much be accessible by train.)

    •  Schenectady is bad - the trains cross the Hudson, (0+ / 0-)

goes through train yards to arrive in Schenectady - it's also an east-west direction when the train is supposed to be going north.  (Stopping at Schenectady is no big deal if the train is going out to Buffalo.)

The time I took the train to Montreal, I drove up from the NYS Thruway up RT 22 - to pick up the train in Fort Edward. It much less time to travel the 75 miles compared to the time it took the train to go from Albany to Fort Edward, except that the train was an hour late, so my plans to spend less time going to Montreal didn't work.

They've done a great job on the Albany->NYC run, but the rest of the line needs a LOT of work.

(Also, I think now the Amtrak is running on a different track that the MetroNorth trains now, because every once in a while we pass a MetroNorth train on a different track).

I thought so too, but I went down to the city last Tuesday and we were 45 minutes late because we were stuck behind a Metro North local that got in front of us at Croton-Harmon. Was NOT fun.

I hadn't thought about catching the train at Fort Edward - might have to do that next time (I'm in southern Saratoga County so it wouldn't be a bad drive).

        •  Ouch!! I thought they had worked that out. (0+ / 0-)

          Try Fort Edward.

One of my continual disappointment is how railway stations are not used as railstations any more.  They haven't been torn down, fortunately, but so many of them are antique stores, knotches shops, restaurants, etc.

The Fort Edward station is like that - a beautiful building all locked up.  When I went there (about 1-2 years ago) they were doing some interior work there, but I'm not sure they're making it a train station.

I have some friends in the area & I'll have to swing by and see what they've done with the place.
