    Didn't Michelle Bachmann once make some comment about how if Democrats had their way, everybody would be living in highrises and riding light rail to their government jobs? (Amusingly, she made the comment on Paul Weyrich's radio show, unaware that he's a rare conservative who is an enthusiastic rail supporter).

    I also remember Paul Krugman's amusement during the 2008 oil price spike about how conservatives were suddenly receptive to arguments that speculators were manipulating the market and oil should be a lot cheaper. He intimated that conservatives had realized just how much the appeal of their ideology is dependent on the suburban/exurban home reachable by interstate highway, and not something natural. I wish he'd stated it as explicitly as you just did.
