  •  The thing that stands out most (7+ / 0-)

is the reason given for dropping criminal charges.  Per the Washington Post, CIA and DOJ officials say the reason is "motive."  They accept the alleged motive, that the tapes were destroyed to avoid retaliation against the US, as credible and mitigating.

Of course, the whistleblowers prosecuted by this administration had good motives, too, and many would say more compelling and credible than the alleged motive for destruction of the torture tapes.

The government's excuse in this instance is thus revealed as a lie, leaving the public to deduce, from the pattern of prosecutions the real reason for dropping criminal charges.  When we look at that pattern, we see that the government only prosecutes mishandling of classified documents when it would expose government wrongdoing.  When mishandling of classified documents aids coverup of government wrongdoing (or suspected wrongdoing), no charges are filed.

Thus, with a single word, "motive," federal officials have shattered any illusion that the classification program and DOJ.have integrity.

      around May 2009.

it poses 'a threat to our national security and our troops' for the American people to actually know the truth.

The stupidity of all this gets on my very last nerve. Like we don't already know? Like the whole world doesn't already frikkin know? Hell, George and Dick and Liz... they're on my TV not only openly admitting to it, but bragging about it, and how skillfuly they 'gamed the system'.

      ugh shudders
