but his attempts to create a Harvard seminar in DC politics seems to have failed so far.

Poor folks cannot afford his experiment.  They desparately need a fighter to help them.  So far, they do not have one.

from some work of fiction or other:

Time is a luxury we do not have.

If Obama wants to try, fine.  He's got exactly four years to produce results.  Publish or perish.  Deadline is looming.  With the economy forecast to suck for the remainder of his term, the public will not be in a forgiving mood in 2012 and "I need four more years to finish the job." is not going to be a winning message unless the first four produce obvious results.

      Show me the POLICY!

      •  Yes, it's quite a balancing act he's attempting (3+ / 0-)

He has to make tangible progress on many many fronts, while still remaining true to his greater vision (assuming he still believes the success of that vision is paramount for long-term progress).

It can't be easy. But that's why we hired a brilliant and energetic politician for the job.

In time we'll know if Obama's famous "long view" will pay off. I'm still optimistic it will.

Regardless, I'm sure glad he's not so shallow that he would abandon it in the wake of the Bush economy that he could not control (and that will take years to clean up).

Let's get real. Whatever he tried would have "seemed" to have failed so far.

I think it goes to whether one thinks the Rs will negotiate.  I think the project is doomed to failure.  You don't.  So we wil disagree.

I recommended your diary because I thought it was a fair discussion.

Obama is not a blue dog.  He has some progressive inclinations, but often is too willing to compromise or even pre-compromise.

Unless he changes his approach, and he might becasue he is a bright person, he will lose in 2012.

We can disagree about the wisdom of the "Obama project." Time will tell. But at least you are debating who Obama really is -- rather than trying to convince everyone he's an uncaring, self-interested sellout, etc.
