That without compromise, we don't have a Declaration of Independence or a Constitution. It is part of governance.

I don't recall the authors of the Declaration of Independence compromising with King George III.

As for the Constitution, there were certainly compromises (and crucial ones) over the structure of a stronger Federal government.  But how much "compromise" was there over the basic principle of a stronger government?

Also, I don't entirely buy the notion that liberals who favor a more activist government are more likely to be forced into compromising than conservatives who don't.  Nowadays the so-called "conservatives" are just as interested in activist government as liberals are--even libertarian poster child Rand Paul is starting to waffle on earmarks. So the real problem here is the inability of too many liberals to come up with a set of firmly held principles regarding the role of government in American society.

People who are in a constant muddle over what they really stand for do tend to be outmaneuvered and outfought by those who are perfectly clear on the subject of principles.

Apart from the creation of two separate houses of the legislature in order to balance big states with small ones, and the decision to handle slaves as 3/5 of a person in order to balance northern states with southern ones, nothing major.
