    An an argument between a stubborn ideologue and a reasonable person attempting to find common ground, the stubborn ideologue will win every time. Why? Because the ideologue is stubborn. Even if proven wrong, he won't admit it. On the other hand, the reasonable person will attempt to understand the ideologue's point of view and might even be willing to make adjustments and accomodations.

    The paradoxical result is that good people are not good at pushing through policy, but bad people are.

    This is why it is so important for the notion of civility and mutual respect be reintroduced into the public discourse. Otherwise the bullies win.

    I am not optimistic, however.

      Republicans would love it if we just dug in our heels and said we won't work to get anything done unless we do it our way.  They would be all to happy to have nothing done, that's their goal.
