    I agree with you that someone "more liberal" than Nelson wouldn't have a good shot.  Someone only as liberal than Nelson but more populist might:  think of Jim Webb, Jon Tester, Bob Casey Jr., Joe Manchin, Bill Halter.  

    Here's the thing, though, that we saw from Lincoln vs. Halter:  when liberal communities like this one get all excited about the challenger, the incumbent can flip that and say that the challenger is a liberal who can't win and is being foisted upon the district by outside influences.

    And some of the people who fit that moderate/populist profile are pains in the ass, too.  They still create rifts in the caucus over issues like the environment, gender and sexuality, foreign policy, etc.  That's because they're not orthodox liberals.  And we can't expect Democrats to be orthodox liberals in all conditions.  If we did, we'd all be very pleased with our Congresspeople, and we'd also lose almost every election 35%-65%.
