    ... his inordinate and frankly unfounded respect and deference for the "proper role of the Legislature." This style of his would have probably worked with a Senate of Howard Bakers, Nancy Kassebaums, and John Danforths. He really does need to admit that his theory of ideal power among the Branches is simply that: a theory that fits better in the body of a thoughtful text or lecture series.

    His default instinct is to get to some deal simply because there's a deal to be had. He and his team seem to believe that all positions are politically, morally and ethically neutral. That kind of relative thinking will destroy the legacy of the New Deal and the Democratic Party along with it.
