  •  I'll never forget Coppola's struggles to get (4+ / 0-)

Apocalypse Now made and the fact that he confessed he almost went under with its stresses.

Do you remember that he said that they were Vietnam and not just that they were making a movie about it?

"We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little, we went insane."

....more or less.  A one-liner comes to mind, if one wanted to evaluate FFC and how he made Apocalypse Now:

"Great film, Francis.  Don't ever put us through that moviemaking experience again."

"It's only in books that the officers of the detective force are superior to the weakness of making a mistake." (Wilkie Collins, The Moonstone)

      •  I'm always impressed with directors who confess (1+ / 0-)

that tackling a challenging film for them almost did them under.

Ben Affleck was freaked out while making The Town and he endeared himself to his lead actor (name escapes)
        by showing his vulnerability.

Haven't seen the film; just found the IMDB entry.

          •  No. Wasn't Hamm. Was Jeremy Renner, of The (2+ / 0-)

Hurt Locker (I looked it up).

            •  OK, fair enough (0+ / 0-)

I actually missed The Hurt Locker during its theatrical run.  I also read somewhere that the Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger film The Small Back Room (which I do vaguely remember seeing) is a 60-year in advance forerunner of The Hurt Locker.

              •  There is a brief bomb-disarming sequence in (2+ / 0-)

the old film Seven Days to Noon that riveted us when I was a kid. A distraught scientist sets a bomb ticking to blow up London because of all the damage that his and others' science has created. Very effective for those days.

                •  haven't seen this film, but the..... (0+ / 0-)

....plot idea sounds vaguely familiar (there's a variation on it in one Doctor Who serial from the Jon Pertwee years, if memory serves).
