    ...recognize that political parties are merely one tool of politics. A smart movement learns how to use that tool - just as it uses others - to reach its goals. We haven't done that very well or very often in this country yet.

      We make a mistake when we invert this and think that movement-thinking bolsters the party rather than the other way around.  The conservatives understood this extremely well, and while the newest faux-movement is a subject of the Republicans, the Republican party of today is unrecognizable by 1970s standards because it was hijacked by a movement.
