  •  Honestly I don't even think it's about power (8+ / 0-)

anymore. Their strings are being pulled alternately by their corporate masters and now the tea party zealots. They are expected to tow the line, not do things their way. The pay-off however is the prestige and status  of their position along with all it's associated perks. They would never be treated so deferentially in real life in a real job.

It seems to me it's the status that really goes to their heads. That along with the potential for a lucrative lobbying position when they leave office. They are truly set for life if they tow the line for their puppet masters while in office.

    •  its about nationalism and bible study (6+ / 0-)

They want people to fear and not think.  Be scared of the boogeyman, scared of liberals, scared of black presidents, scared of anything and everything.  They want people to eschew science for religion because some reasonable person a while back didn't think he needed this phrase in the Constitution: "God may have created the Heavens and the Earth...but he didn't create this country...we blood and by sweat and by tears and by sacrifice."

2oo plus years later conservatives believe two things...God gave us America and in the bible we were given nature's bounty...and "science" can't possibly trump the words of a myth.  They believe in the idea of American exceptionalism.  Exceptionalism is just a synonym for nationalism but without Nazi connotation.  The US, at ONE TIME, was the greatest nation on earth.  Unquestioned military leader.  Unquestioned economic titan.  Unquestioned heart of innovation.  At one time America PAID its bills...and still thrived.  At one time America's rich paid a fair tax and didn't have miles of loopholes to evade paying anything..and actually remained wealthy.  At one time this country actually prided itself on being an educated society and of keeping the poorest of us in reach of the American Dream of being able to afford a family, afford living expenses, afford a comfortable home.  Republicans act as though that country still exists.  But sadly, belief doesn't make something real.

      •  You make an eloquent statement (0+ / 0-)

and a lot of it is true, but a lot of that ideology is a smokescreen behind which they obfuscate their basic policy of serving the tiny minority of multimillionaires and multinational corporations while stealing from the rest of us.
