Had lunch with him in Iraq a few years ago when he was on a visit.  I actually thought he was a thoughtful, serious man - more so than most others in his party.  Deeply conservative, but I didn't get the sense that he was completely close-minded.

It didn't surprise me that he called out people for listening to Glenn Beck.  He's a deeply religious Southern lawyer type - the sort of man who supports the death penalty but would be outraged by a bad defense attorney - if any of that makes sense. The sort of man who is highly intelligent and not opposed to science, but not willing to look too closely at contradictions between science and his theology.

Anyway, I felt bad for him losing that election... we weren't going to take the seat and it would be better to have a man who is conservative but not crazy.

And while I'm opposed to capital punishment, I absolutely understand how someone can support the death penalty for people who are truly guilty and be outraged at attorneys who don't present a proper defense for clients, so as to most nearly ensure that innocent people are not put to death.
