How is a rail corridor in the eastern half of the US "thinking west"?

Its got to be a project that has already got its application in, if we are going to get the money turned around in time for ground to be broken in 2011 or 2012, and we want either trains running on the new timetable or people working on the lines come election day 2012.

I fully agree on the balance of our opportunities to take advantage of the "single track revolution" and all the four track wide rights of way with nothing left in them but a single bi-di line and a few widely spaced sidings.

West of Chicago.  You're now going to jump all over everyone for figures of speech?

It was money allocated to the Midwest and it should arguably stay here.  Double-tracking was applied for, and so was the route around southern lake Michigan.

... it makes more sense with that made explicit. Since I don't live in Chicago, I don't naturally line up the country as east or west of Chicago.

The money was not allocated by region and then subdivided by project, individual states applied, and Illinois got the Chicago / St. Louis funded to the point of launching the project. If the projects you point to were in their grant application and not funded, then certainly they should be considered. I haven't read Illinois' grant application in over a year, so I don't recall.
