    to serve their own needs.

    Uber-wealthy people who wanted to see automobile tires, gasoline, and autos, bought the trolly companies all over the country, ripped up the tracks, put them in dumps, and destroyed the trolly cars.

    Talk about despicable actions on the part of corporations, that hurt the average person.

    In this case, they happen to have hurt the planet's environment as well, contributing to threatening the survival of all humanity.

    Gee thanks.

      I remember a radio report a number of years ago about what happened to KC's streetcars, and it was exactly what you describe.  Private firms bought them (many of them auto companies and oil compaines), then raised the rates, monkeyed around with the timetables, etc... everything possible to cause the ridership to plunge, and then used that as a justification for shutting them down.  Then they sold more cars and more oil.
