    Historically, I think that modern liberalism would not have emerged without the Reformation. However, there was an earlier form of liberalism in ancient Greece. They didn't have our modern sense of individualism, but they had a lot more in common.

    However, for cultures that have been through the whole axial religious thing--which the ancient Greeks had not--I think that the reformation experience may very well be necessary before liberalism can really take root. Whether it needs to happen first, or whether both can happen simultaneously, I wouldn't want to say. But with no reformation at all.... I'd have to agree that that just won't work.
