    are you?

    Most people were relatively unconcerned about a few Cubans making it to Florida. In fact, most people felt sorry for them. Escaping from communism was considered an honorable thing back then. They were viewed as deserving political refugees rather than economic immigrants.

    Carter had a terrible economy, an energy crisis, and American hostages paraded on TV every day for 444 days in the runup to the '80 election. Not to mention being attacked by an insane rabbit in the Rose Garden. The guy could not catch a break.

    •  I agree that the Mariel Boat lift was (0+ / 0-)

      not the only catastrophy going on at the time, but it lead the news where I lived at the time,(NYC) and I do remember it was the tipping point that gave the opposition a concrete Carter decision to beat him over the head with.

        Why you feel the need to plop this turd on a topic about which you quite obviously have so little understanding is perplexing.

        Millions of Latinos, many very accomplished, are hoping against hope for this glimmer of justice.

        Let me provide a few human examples:

        1. A brilliant young student at Harvard, in danger of deportation;
        1. A wonderful student at Brown w/whom I am in communication.  He and his brother, tho they have done everything right in their life, again fear deportation;
        1. The famed Robotics Kids at Carl Hayden HS here in Phoenix have become the stuff of legend.  A brilliant article in Wired Magazine first detailed their incredible accomplishment several years ago as these kids, from terrible poverty, beat the team from MIT in an underwater robotics competition.  Since that time, successive groups of students have continued to win national and international competitions even as they spawned an entire movement, inspiring many.

        So spare me the flawed and facile "analysis"!!!

        The opposition never beat Carter up over bailing out Chrysler, canceling military pay raises, declared amnesty to Vietnam draft dodgers, giving back the Panama Canal, and signing the SALT II nuclear arms reduction treaty?

        Come on. The Cuban refugees were a minor event. Immigration was not a big deal in the early 80's. The Soviets invading Afghanistan and OPEC eating our lunch were much bigger concerns.
