  •  Johnson escalated the Vietnam war (0+ / 0-)

and was reviled by much of the Left at the time.

Carter was described in language almost identical to that describing Obama now.  Especially in his last year, he pissed off the liberal wing of the party tremendously -- that's why Ted Kennedy thought he could win the nomination.

Twenty years from now, people will say that Obama was our friend, because in that future context -- as with Carter -- we'll remember the good more than the disappointing.

    •  LBJ's war (0+ / 0-)

shattered not just his presidency but Nixon's.

      Carter was also weak.

      A friend but weak.

      •  Nixon would have survived longer than 1974 (0+ / 0-)

had he not been so unnecessarily Nixonian.

I remember a lot of leftist criticism of Carter's putting on the belligerence in the last year of his Presidency.  I remember being a critic, in fact.

He has aged well, in multiple senses of the word, but I don't think you'd have been singing that same tune in mid-1980.
