  •  I like B. Clinton's optimistic formulation: (10+ / 0-)
"there's nothing wrong with America that can't be fixed by what's right with America".   It can happen, but it doesn't have to happen; god helps those who help themselves, still got to play the game, etc.

Don't like how your congressman votes? You could write him, or you could write an open letter to Michelle Obama.

    •  I Don't, It's Not True. Elements of Our System (9+ / 0-)

are extremely dangerous and obstructive of the maintenance of a large middle class. What's needed to fix a number of things about America is what's best about governance elsewhere, maybe in some cases invention that hasn't happened anywhere yet.

....of the America of the late 1890s - early 1960s...where peasants from various European monarchies and oligarchies became valuable additions to the United States, helped the Allies win WW II, and became members of a strong, vibrant middle class.

Chew on this - have any East Indians become a UK Prime Minster or Secretary, or Moroccans or Algerians become integrated fully into French society, or has there been a Turkish-German Chancellor?

9-11 changed everything? Well, Katrina changed it back.

Yes, an Indian has become a Minister in the UK  =Keith Vaz, and an Algerian woman has, I believe,  become a Minister in France, although I cannot recall the name.

        •  You're going to compare the Turkish (0+ / 0-)

minority, which entered Germany in the 1960s and still form a few percentage, with minorities in the US which have been well-established here for centuries and make up 10% or more of the population?

Really? That's what American Exceptionalism is, right there -- make up your goalposts so you can always masturbate over your own goalposts.

So very much like the Soviet tendency to self-worship.

Ego masturbation from the far right. Stoke it and stroke it.
