  •  I think that's a perversion of (7+ / 0-)

    American exceptionalism.

I believe in American exceptionalism because were are not a homogenous monolithic society.  By contrast we are a people comprised of every single race, religion, and ethnicity in the world.  That's why we do as well as we do.  Similarly, part of American exceptionalism (at least in my view) is that we must have leadership comprised of all races, religions, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations.  Although we don't always live up to our goals (and we've had quite a number of fail in this regard) of diversity and equality, the steps we've taken to acheive societal equality and diversity in leadership demonstrate exceptionalism.  Because only in that way, do you truly take advantage of your diversity and maintain exceptionalism.

The master race shit is a perversion because it denies what makes American exceptionalism: equality and diversity.

Except that I'm pretty sure the people pushing this meme don't mean it in that way.

They tortured people to get false confessions to justify invading Iraq.

"I believe in American exceptionalism because we are not a homogeneous monolithic society"  So are we in Canada.  Since that's the case, your not exceptional any more.  So are most of the countries in Europe, so you're not exceptional.

If history is any indication, the best summation of what "American Exceptionalism"  is would be:

What is "American Exceptionalism" and why is it so important to those on the right that American presidents believe in it? A perusal of various writings on the subject leads in various directions, but essentially it comes down to a belief that we white Americans are better than everyone else.

If it were any other way, we wouldn't have the "we want our country back" crowd... they don't want the POTUS representing America because to those who espouse American Exceptionalism he is not representative of what they deem America to be ( that whole "white, Christian nation" BS )

While there are exceptional non-white americans, to the proponents of American Exceptionalism, they are still teh scary other and therefore unfit and unworthy.

    •  No true Exeptionalists, eh? (0+ / 0-)

Just like Stalin was just a "perversion" of Lenin's master plan, eh?

The lack of self-consciousness is amazing.
