Yes, Al Qaida is executing their program, their way, to their ends. Well said there. But we in the west have been reframing all that they do, our way, to our ends. Well, not us here on DKos. Us as in the western security infrastructure. For them, if Al Qaida did not exist they would have to be invented.

I'm not saying Al Qaida doesn't exist, and I'm not saying there aren't crazies out there making bombs. What I'm saying is I'm noticing how they are such an oddly perfect excuse to do what some elements of the security infrastructure have wanted to do all along. These people, like Al Qaida itself, are being used to justify creating the security and oversight infrastructure that was the goal (in those quarters) in the first place.

Paranoid? It's been done before, shoot, that's how the entire Iraq War got sold to the country. (Hardly the first time either.) Grab a narrative, adjust it to suit, and repeat it loudly till it sticks. And a first look at the tip of the latest WikiLeaks iceberg that's just coming out does not reassure in this regard.

Bottom line, they've seized on a great excuse to sell the country on doing what they've wanted to do all along. And they're running with it for all they're worth.

Sadly, it will work. A good marketing campaign always does.

Like you, I wondered at first why people like the anti-abortion and violent PETA activists haven't been infiltrated, as you mentioned. Where are, say, Tiller's murderer or the Oklahoma City bombers in this narrative? They are never discussed in this context. I believe it's because the message creep required to include facts like that would dilute the simple and easy to understand frame being built here. Keeping the message simple works. Confusing it with the nuance of, y'know, actual feet on the ground reality? Not so much.

I have no idea what the answer is. I'm just noticing what I think is the question.

It's politics based on the Machiavelli model.  Ruthless, cold calculating, and a proven winner.  But it lacks morality, and most of us here find that rather appalling.

        Yes. Good word, that.

But while it's certainly appalling (to the small minority that actually pays attention) it's remarkably successful. That is, if you couldn't care less about little things like honesty.

This is the same model that the Republicans are using to bury us. Say whatever it takes, spend whatever it takes, to get into power. Then do what you wanted to do in the first place.

Is it premature yet to mourn for American democracy?
