    that aggressive (desperate?) pursuit by any reasonable means of ways to drain cost from alternative energy makes more sense than repressive regulatory regimes.

    The problem with regulatory strategies is that they fall apart when you can't get everyone to play nice and unilateral niceness tends to choke your economy and **ahem** the voters who depend on it.

    That's not say there is no room for regulation an even for energy taxes carefully applied, but...

    cheap energy that puts people to work is an exportable good, and more likely to be picked up by emerging economies.  In a problem where the other side of the world can more than make up for all the good we might do, tain't all bad for doing the right thing to make economic and societal sense.
