  •  Is there hope for tired boomers? (0+ / 0-)

My son-in-law keeps trying to tell me that there has been a seismic cultural shift, that young people are ignoring the superficial culture wars and getting down to work accomplishing things.  He finds it sad that I am so discouraged because he thinks the good guys are actually winning.

He is involved in a couple of groups who are working for solutions in intelligent ways.

"Youth have cooperated within negotiations in an extremely intricate way — in some ways much more than other civil society participants," he said. "We're trying to present a model for what delegates should be doing in order to push forward solutions."

I have become so cynical about the ways of power that I just can't get on board.  Nevertheless, it does my soul a lot of good to hear this kind of talk.

    •  Naomi Klein and the G20. (0+ / 0-)

Opposite the science, policy, and activist side of the equation is the G20.  Naomi Klein to Amy Goodman about Toronto:

But my feeling, when I went by the Convention Center after all the leaders had gone home, was that this was the real crime scene, not those shattered storefronts, but what actually happened at the summit on Sunday night, when the world leaders issued their final communiqué. And what that communiqué said was that there wouldn’t even be a measly tax on banks to help pay for the global crisis that they created and also prevent future crises. There wouldn’t be a financial transaction tax, which could create a fund for social programs and for action on climate change. There wouldn’t be a real action to eliminate subsidies for fossil fuel companies that have also created so many social and environmental costs around the world, as we see with the BP disaster.
