My grandad back in the 50's and 60's was a hard core republican, machinist, and organizer for the Textile Workers of America.

The GOP always says the market should determine wages yet it's interesting that they push for repeal of any regulations relating to industry but not say, Taft Hartley.

Seriously when we look at stuff like the minimum wage, earned income tax credits, Chips medicaid and other medical programs to help low income workers, if the workers truly were freed to organize, strike and get these things for themselves from their employers there would be no need for the gov't to provide these elaborate redistribution schemes.

To me workers organizing and bargaining for wages and benefits fits right into the GOP's alleged ideology.

During the late 70's and early 80's when the economy was down and profits were down I could certainly agree that in order to stay in business companies and labor needed to cut benefits and wages in some instances.

However the weird part was once companies were profitable again in the 90's and making lots of money the mindset of the workers that they should be able to share some of that profit did not turn around really. It's like wage wise a lot of people and the GOP especially is stuck in the mentality of the past regarding wages and benefits even when companies are profitable.
