I'm a liberal.  I'd love to see a Congress full of people like Ted Kennedy.  But I am also a pragmatist.  I recognize that there are a lot of places in this country where that kind of liberalism simply won't fly.  I also recognize that our hard-won Democratic majority in 2006 and 2008 was a result of our ability to form a coalition with Blue Dogs.  We may not agree with them on everything, but we agree with them on some things.  And some is better than none.  I see far too many Democrats willing to sacrifice victory in the name of ideological purity, and that will get us nowhere.

For an R+ state. I believe
      the numbers have only gotten
      worse since then, though.

      The unions are surprisingly strong
in that part of TN for some reason.

Thanks for all of your efforts.

We have to be willing to make very long term investments in conservative areas recognizing that we may not win the next race or the one after that but we have to be true to our values and engage the community.  When we show them that we are not scary and that we are committed to the community we will make electoral gains and debunk all the lies that Republicans tell.

      •  But what about... (0+ / 0-)

...those areas in which our values and those of the people who live there are just mutually exclusive?  It's all well and good to take the long view, and I see what you're saying, but I really believe that there are vast swaths of America where it will never fly no matter how much we engage the community.  Do you believe that we will be able to convince devoutly Christian opponents of abortion to accept a pro-choice stance?  I'm not so sure.  Maybe I'm just too pessimistic.

While one of the ways that politicians especially conservative ones try to diminish their opponents is by ridicule, I think if one shows a committed patience and doesn't give up, eventually, they will get heard.

We are seeing the foundations that so many of these conservatives cling to start to crumble.  Just this past month the Pope of the Roman Catholic church suggested that condoms were ok in certain circumstances.  This is a huge positional change obviously based on the realities on the ground.  Change is possible.  Progressives need to be in place to present their ideas.  I can envision a possibility that people will stop litmus testing a candidate on one narrow issue and decide that while she or he may not match my values on this particular issue, but dog-gonnit, I like this person and trust them to represent me.  That is where Democrats need to get to.
