... is that OFA's looking for a win to pull in constituencies for the president's 2012 run while legitimate LGBT groups that have been pounding this beat for many moons sincerely want the damn thing repealed and the rights of all recognized.

Electoral considerations for politicians be damned ... period.

...OFA is only choosing this because they want a win under their belt to help build their coalition to help Democrats get elected and make further legislative progress in the future?

I have two responses to that:

First, if you have read any of the literature that exists about effective community organizing, you would know that the most effective groups choose battles they have a reasonable chance of winning and that are supported by the broadest coalition of people. That builds power for the collective group of individuals and helps them be even more successful in the future. So I'm down with that. Good choice, imo.

Second, if you think the staff people in OFA or the volunteers who will be making the calls are doing it ONLY for that reason and that they don't give a damn about the rights of our LGBT brothers and sisters, you are so off base as to be laughable. The OFA volunteers AND staff that I have been working with are clamoring for action on this and they want DADT repealed NOW. They also want it repealed FOREVER which is why most of them support it being done by Congress rather than an Executive Order that can simply be overturned in the future.

To be clear, it's "EClectablog", not "Electablog".
