if both sides are zealots, how on earth do you ever find common ground on anything?

If one side is zealous and the other side isn't, the result will be policies that the zealous side wants, i.e. the zealous side wins by default. If both sides are zealous, the result will be a society in which there's a lot of conflict until one side wins a clear and lasting victory and the other side is vanquished and fades into the mists of history. Both cases are problematic. I guess it ultimately comes down to personal preference about how much societal conflict is tolerable vs. how much compromise of one's core principles is tolerable.
