  •  Except that I have found that when a politician (4+ / 0-)

or public figure changes his/her political party affiliation, it's usually because they are opportunists, and they are only loyal to a party out of opportunity.  Nancy Reagan was a Republican, and she and others talked Reagan to become Republican.

Go back into his history. Reagan, as President of the Screen Actor's Guild, he supported McCarthyism and caused many actors to become blacklisted and he didn't support them when they needed the support.

After the war he decided to support Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. After he gave a speech for Barry Goldwater, he was approached to turn Republican, ran and won as Governor of California.  The rest is history.

All of this was opportunity knocking at his door if he changed parties.
