I was disappointed that he hadn't issued any pardons/commutations. But I could at least hope that he was working behind the scenes, and just saving up for a BIG announcement, with like 100 or more all at once, with many of them being for big stuff. Even maybe a few that would affect people CURRENTLY in jail. That was my hope. But now it looks like this is gonna be it (at least for now). More of a token than anything else.

(and is it fair to compare/contrast this to Obama's blocking war crimes prosecutions... even those contemplated in other countries?)

    •  Just a question ... (0+ / 0-)

... what exactly would be the right # then? I'm also pretty sure those 9 people would not agree with you that 0 is better than 9. But, hey, this is bashObama.com, so go for it!

It's stating what Obama should do.

      •  And I'm sure those tens of thousands... (0+ / 0-)

... of people now in jail or on probation/parole for non-violent drug crimes will look at that list of 9, and their (mostly ancient, mostly very minor, mostly now irrelevant) offenses and wonder what's up. I don't know, but I wouldn't be suprised if one of the pardon requests is from the guy who's now in about his 10th year of incarceration for an LSD conviction when he was 20 years old. He's still got another 20 years to go! If I learn that he (or others like him) has requested mercy from Obama and gets NOTHING... well then, I'll have more to say at that time.

I'll say again: This was very likely nothing more than a token action.

        •  Obama can only pardon Federal offenses. (0+ / 0-)

Yes, they're disproportionately non-violent drug cases, but the fact of these 9 does not imply there's no more coming. Instead of bashing, let's brainstorm how to apply pressure for more.

          •  Didn't know that about only Fed laws (0+ / 0-)

But as for the rest, I still think the "quality" of the first 9 he chose is (or could be) pretty telling. But if I was president, I'd get involved in some state cases, too. I'd contact governors and encourage THEM to issue pardons. Might not always work, but couldn't hurt.
