... Despite that hundreds of users receive warnings. Scores have their ratings privileges suspended (temporarily) for repeatedly uprating insults or HR abuse. If they do it after privileges are returned, their ratings abilities are permanently removed. Other users are suspended for repeated rule violations. And banned if they keep it up after the suspension ends. But there is absolutely no way I can catch them all - not even close. That is the job of community moderation.

When I publicly say something of a moderating nature to a user, I expect other users to extrapolate from that. But many people don't.

For instance, long ago I said "Obamabot," "Obama-hater," "firebagger" and other insults are HRable. That is, if somebody slings an insult an gets HRed for it, I'm not going to intervene. I didn't say any MUST HR an insult; it's voluntary. But I have said that any who UPRATES an insult is out of line, because it enables insulters and encourages others to engage in insults.

But what I have repeatedly seen in comment threads is something along the lines of "MB says 'Obamabot' is a mandatory HR." Conveniently ignoring several things I said, and pretending that "Obamabot" is the only insult that matters.

To repeat: I can't possibly catch all the "gratuitous and unfounded offensive, insulting, and snarky things" written here. That's a job for community moderation, a job for people who don't just jump on people who they disagree with who engage in that behavior but are evenhanded about criticizing users they disagree with AND agree with politically. THAT, plus back-up from me in egregious cases is what will reduce the behavior you're justifiably objecting to.

Don't tell me what you believe. Tell me what you do and I'll tell you what you believe.

I'm not saying you have an easy job, by any means, or that you can possibly police every comment that gets posted here.  What I'm mostly talking about is entire diaries that are hijacked by self-righteous bloggers wielding donuts instead of making reasoned responses.  I have seen it happen more times than I care to remember that a blogger, including one or two who regularly blog on this diary, makes what appears to be a legitimate effort to say something that does not necessarily conform to the Kos party line, and no sooner does the diary go up than the pack descends, crossing fingers in the sign of the troll, wielding flaming donuts and graphics, and making insulting ad hominem comments.  I have seen these snark attacks go on for hundreds of comments after the blood gets into the water.  You say that the community should police itself in this regard, but all too often anyone who might try to come to the defense of the diarist also gets labeled and insulted.  You might easily guess what lesson that person will take away.  I saw one of these just the other day, liberals attacking another liberal for nothing more than failing to toe their particular line.  I thought the diarist made a good point, but to my own shame, I snuck out the back door rather than saying anything because I knew exactly what would happen if I did.  I view this as a systemic problem.

When liberals join the ranks of the thought police, we have gone off the track.  And it certainly doesn't do anything to improve the actual discourse. As Thomas Carlyle once said, “Every new opinion, at its starting, is precisely in a minority of one.”  But that alone doesn’t make it wrong.  And it doesn't entitle anyone to level personal attacks against the lonely one who dares to express it.

Again, thank you for listening and for caring.  I don't envy your job.
