  •  And there are still history maven (8+ / 0-)

anthropologists too who challenge the idea of matriarchy. They do accept matrilinial, but only with men in charge.

    •  Well, on the brighter side (10+ / 0-)

I actually learned about Kush's matriarchal reign from my son's Sixth Grade Social Studies text book (helping him study for a test about it). So there's at least a little hope. I can't remember who the text manufacturer is, but one of the big ones.

There will also be those ridiculous, conservative academics in all fields who go to great lengths to challenge very legitimate, and ultimately empowering, notions like gasp matriarchy.

My best girlfriend dropped her Anthropology major for Queer Theory Studies due to a Department Chair, who was teaching her course, who was like this, actually. She was told that "Feminism had no place in Anthropological Studies." That shocked her; I got one of those phone calls where she was basically up in arms. This is in Oregon, no less. So she switched her entire course of study. She was a year from graduation, and now two years. But that denial was too much for her to handle.

    •  My guess is that humans have tried (5+ / 0-)

...just about every possible form of government, from patriarchal to matriarchal, and everything else in between. We've certainly been around long enough to have done so.
