That has already come to pass. It doesn't get any more evil than waging unnecessary wars of aggression on the citizens of other sovereign countries, killing them, torturing them and holding them indefinitely without trial. On the bright side, at least we're not gassing brown people by the millions. Yet...

if we do not hang together.  Already the anti-semites are joining with the anti- muslims via Beck and are in the process of creating a climate of fear and loathing that makes today a pale foreshadowing of what they have in mind.  The unemployed, financially troubled and dispossessed will look toward "leaders" who promise simplistic responses such as blaming the "other", Mexicans, non-christians, liberals, gays, etc.  This has already started, and is becoming more virulent every day.  When one reads the letters to the editor in some local papers, the hate, violent threats against individuals and groups, and the out and out crys for sedition and taking illegal action is horrifying and increasing.
Unless we take these things seriously, the 30's of italy, Germany and other nations can happen here.  Already, the untruths told by the current administration about the Gulf Oil Disaster has many who trusted government to some extent feeling a new sense of betrayal.  The right wing crazies see opportunity for the kind of chaos that leads to opportunities for unchecked power.  So for my two cents, it can get much worse, and I can't see an effective counterbalance to this at the present time.

Patriotism may be the last refuge of scoundrels, but religion is assuredly the first.
