  •  It's not that the unemployed can go down the tube (5+ / 0-)

(and note that this doesn't help those unemployed in the direst straits - the 99ers and soon-to-be-99ers, plus those who never got any unemployment at all)...

It's that the Republicans caved five times already on extending this!  This one scares the shit out of them.  They grandstand for a little while and then they cave.  In exchange for nothing.

    •  Not in the house they didn't (0+ / 0-)

Only a few crossed over and in the Senate only 1.  With the new Senate and house counts it is a huge gamble that they will this time around especially since all Boehner has to do is not introduce the bill so there isn't a vote at all or attach tax cuts to it when he introduces it

      •  Because they didn't NEED more to cross over (1+ / 0-)

Pelosi played this game very effectively when she was Speaker - on certain votes, she'd only corral as many as she needed to pass the legislation, and let the rest take their turns casting their "conscience" votes.

It would be the same with this.  Republican leadership would simply determine how many were needed to pass the extension and decide on who to vote in favor.

    •  If the Rs caved five times, then why did it (0+ / 0-)

expire starting in November, just after the election. Had the Dems done it right the first time, or the second or third or fourth, we would not be in this mess, but the Congress didn't have the spine to do it. Forget O. He was not in that fight at that point as they wanted to show him who was boss, and boy, did they ever show him.
