that we're thinking it's an either/or situation, and with the procedural complications of the Senate, it might just be an it's not happening situation.

We may well tear ourselves apart over whether it's a good deal or a bad one, only to find out it wasn't one at all.

This is where my main concern lies. If this deal dies - and I freely admit there is a lot not to like - then how do we get UI benefits and working-class tax credits passed? The argument "we press the GOP to do it" falls flat with me. They have no shame to begin with. Once they control the House, those very important stimulative items will never see the light of day for the next two years.

extended if the deal dies?  The next bill would have to come from the House, which will have a Repug majority. They won't vote a bill with middle class cuts alone, as the old House just did.  They would pass a bill making all the tax cuts permanent; the Senate would vote it down (or filibuster it?) and then the tax rate goes back up for everyone.

Someone tell me why this is not what will not happen in the new Congress.

"YES WE CAN!." Barack Obama Update: Well, apparently we can't.
